Back in 2009, Kanye West was preparing to take his influence in music and fashion into the world of luxury footwear. His collaboration with Louis Vuitton introduced a collection of sneakers that paired the French fashion house’s premium materials and craftsmanship with West’s bold personal style.
The collection featured three main silhouettes: the Don, the Jasper and the Mr. Hudson. The names were personal references to people in Kanye’s circle: Don C, his longtime manager; Ibn Jasper, his barber and close collaborator; and musician Mr Hudson. The designs ranged from low-top styles to statement high-tops, with layered panels, suede and leather finishes, distinctive straps and signature Louis Vuitton details.
The high-top designs stood out for their double-strap closures and sculpted shape, while the Don low-top offered a more streamlined profile. Details such as premium suede, contrasting materials and gold-tone lace hardware helped distinguish the collection from a typical sneaker release.
At the time of this original preview, the sneakers were expected to arrive in June 2009. The collection later drew attention for its luxury-level pricing: reported retail prices ranged from about $840 for the Mr. Hudson to $870 and up for the Don, with select Jasper versions reaching $1,140.
The Louis Vuitton collaboration remains an important chapter in Kanye West’s footwear history. It showed how a musician could work directly with a major luxury fashion house to create a complete sneaker collection, years before his later Yeezy releases would become a global phenomenon.
